Transitional Housing

Transitional Housing Provides a Bridge to Success

Recognizing that stable housing is one of the keys to What Works in corrections, GEO Reentry supports community correctional agencies to develop, coordinate, or oversee transitional housing programs. These transitional housing programs offer justice-involved individuals temporary housing accommodations, connect them to important community resources, and help them rebuild their lives, gain stability, and work toward becoming productive members of local communities.

GEO Reentry coordinates the placement of participants with approved transitional housing providers, assists with the accurate dispersion of agency funds for these services, and ensures providers deliver quality housing and services. For example, in Idaho, GEO Reentry helped the Department of Correction to develop detailed standards for its transitional housing network, assess and select providers, conduct frequent audits to ensure service standards are being met, and even handle financial transactions for services.

Connecting Participants with Important Services

When GEO Reentry supports agencies to manage transitional housing programs, we also facilitate referrals to evidence-based programming and services such as:

  • Counseling and Case Management. Assistance in accessing social services, employment resources, and mental health support.
  • Life Skills Training. Programs to help individuals develop essential life skills such as budgeting, job readiness, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
  • Substance Use Treatment. Referrals for individuals struggling with substance use issues, including access to counseling and rehabilitation programs.
  • Education and Vocational Training. Opportunities for individuals to pursue educational goals or gain vocational skills that can enhance their employability.
  • Community Support. Connection to support networks and peer groups to foster a sense of belonging and reduce the risk of recidivism.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Treatment. Services that help individuals get to the root of criminal behavior and change these patterns.

The goal of transitional housing programs is to provide a structured and supportive environment that helps justice-involved individuals successfully return to the community, reducing the likelihood of re-offending and promoting positive outcomes for both individuals and communities. GEO Reentry can assist agencies to make this happen.
